Wheat is cycled through a "working slot" during production and slowly degrades from wheat to Mouldy Wheat to Decaying Wheat to Mulch. Fungus production appears to proceed at the same rate for all these stages, but each further degradation stage up to Mulch lasts longer than the previous one. Mulch is a waste product and will have to be removed.
Important Note: The creation of Mycelium requires a damp and dark environment. The moistener will for that reason only work if the light level is at 11 or less. In addition the Mycelium production will speed up with deepening darkness. In very dark environments the process will be four times faster than at light level 11.

The Moistener automatically tries to move Mulch into the input area for Wheat as soon as it finishes using all the Decaying Wheat and starts on another round of Wheat. If Pipes are used to input Wheat, the Moistener will keep enough slots free to ensure that it has a place to put the Mulch when the time comes. However, it will not stop the player from placing additional Wheat in these slots. This can jam the machine and halt production if the Mulch is not manually removed, since there is no way to remove items from the working slot with Pipes.
The Moistener does not allow Wheat to be removed by Pipes, so items can safely be pumped out nonstop from the sides to pull Mulch and products out as soon as they are available.
Although the Moistener's products can be pumped out the side, Gates on pipes attached to the sides will not recognize these items if set to an input type such as Items In Inventory.
